What are SMD Resettable Fuses?

SMD Resettable Fuses, also known as Surface Mount Device (SMD) self-resetting fuses, is an overcurrent protection component based on PTC (Positive Temperature Coefficient) material. It is specifically designed for modern electronic devices and adopts the surface mounting technology (SMD), featuring a small size, easy installation, and the ability to effectively prevent damage to circuits caused by overcurrent or short circuits.

Working principle of SMD resettable fuses

This fuse contains a special polymer composite material with a positive temperature coefficient property. When the current in the circuit is normal, the resistance of the fuse remains at a low level, allowing the current to pass freely. When an overcurrent occurs, the fuse will rapidly heat up, and the material resistance will significantly increase, thereby limiting the current flow and protecting the circuit from damage. Once the overcurrent situation is resolved, the fuse temperature drops, and the resistance returns to its initial low value, allowing the circuit to resume normal operation without the need to replace the fuse.

Comprehensive Guide to Resettable Fuses (PTC): Working Principle,Types,Specifications and Applications

Normal working

  • Within the normal current range, the heat generated when the current passes through the fuse is relatively small. The polymer material is in a low-temperature state, and the resistance remains at a very low level. The current can flow smoothly, ensuring the normal operation of the circuit.

Overcurrent state triggered

  • When the current in the circuit exceeds the rated current of the fuse (Hold Current) and reaches or exceeds the tripping current (Trip Current), the current flowing through the fuse will rapidly generate a large amount of heat, causing the temperature of the internal polymer to rise rapidly.

The resistance has increased sharply

  • When the temperature reaches a certain critical point, the polymer matrix undergoes structural changes, blocking the conductive pathways. As a result, the resistance value of the material will sharply increase, even growing by thousands of times, thereby significantly restricting the current flow and preventing the circuit from further suffering overcurrent damage.

Protective circuit

  • The sudden increase in resistance effectively reduces the current flowing through the circuit, functioning similarly to a switch being turned off. However, unlike traditional fuses, the circuit is not physically cut off; instead, the current is limited through the change in the material's resistance.

Self-recovery

  • When the overcurrent or short-circuit condition is eliminated, the current flowing through the fuse decreases, the material temperature gradually drops to the normal range, the polymer structure returns to its original state, the resistance rapidly decreases back to the initial low value, and the circuit becomes unobstructed. There is no need to replace the fuse.

Repeatedly and continuously use

  • Due to the reversible nature of polymer materials, the SMD self-recovery fuse can be repeatedly used multiple times. Even after experiencing multiple overcurrent incidents, it still maintains its protective capability, significantly enhancing the safety and reliability of the equipment.

The SMD self-resetting fuse utilizes the temperature-sensitive property of PTC materials to dynamically adjust the resistance through temperature changes, thereby achieving overcurrent protection for the circuit. Compared to traditional fuses, it not only can automatically reset, reducing maintenance costs, but also provides more stable and long-lasting protection for electronic devices.

Application area

Mobile phones, tablets and other portable electronic devices

Portable devices such as smart phones, tablets, and smart watches have strict requirements for size and weight. SMD self-resetting fuses, due to their compact packaging and high reliability, are widely used in the power circuits and data interfaces of these devices for protection. When the battery or charger experiences overcurrent or short circuit, the fuse can respond quickly, protecting the circuit board and core chips from damage. At the same time, the automatic recovery function avoids the hassle of replacing components and enhances the lifespan and user experience of the device.

Power adapter and charger

In various power adapters, USB chargers, and fast charging devices, current fluctuations and abnormal short circuits are quite common. The SMD self-resetting fuse, as a key protective component, can quickly limit overcurrent, prevent the power circuit from being burned out due to short circuits or faults, and ensure the safety of the equipment. Its small size design makes it convenient to integrate into complex circuits, and it supports multiple protection cycles, extending the product's service life.

Automotive electronic system

As the degree of electronicization of automobiles increases, various electrical components such as in-vehicle entertainment systems, autonomous driving assistance systems, and sensor modules all require efficient current protection. SMD self-resetting fuses are suitable for the harsh working environment of the automotive industry. They possess characteristics such as high temperature resistance and vibration resistance, and can quickly respond and protect critical electronic components in the event of sudden overcurrent or short circuit, ensuring driving safety and system stability.

Household appliances and industrial control equipment

Modern household appliances such as smart TVs, refrigerators, air conditioners, and washing machines integrate a large number of electronic control modules. SMD self-resetting fuses, as circuit protection components, prevent overcurrent from causing circuit faults or fire risks. At the same time, they support multiple protections, extend the lifespan of household appliances, enhance safety and user satisfaction.
